In this seminar, Asst. Prof Kiran Garimella from the School of Communication and Information at Rutgers University discussed how WhatsApp was used by political parties in India to spread misinformation and hate speech. He delved into developing solutions for content moderation in WhatsApp and presented two solutions: One based on an on-device setup to moderate content before the content was encrypted, and the second based on a crowdsourced bottom-up model for fact checking. He summed up his presentation with potential future research directions in the space of content moderation.

Joined by our moderator, Asst. Prof Kokil Jaidka from the Department of Communications and New Media at the National University of Singapore, the duo further discussed the implications of misinformation.
